Maldives 2007 – A Record Year for Tourists

6th February 2008

Everyone has seen the classic images of the Maldives. The atoll chain is synonymous with fine white sandy beaches, azure lagoons and a quiet, romantic atmosphere. These days the two prinicpal visitors are honeymooners and of course, people like you….divers.

Recent figures from the Maldives Tourist Board reveal that the popularity of the country continues to rise with a record total of 675,889 tourists in 2007. This represents an increase of 12.3% on the previous year.

Countries of origin ranks as follows:
UK – 125,158
Italy – 117,246
Germany – 72,269
France – 45,301
Japan – 41,121
China – 35,976

But do not fear. The reason for the increase and the vast majority of visitor numbers relate to resorts, their expansion and the improvement of their infrastructure.

We at Dive The World know that to get the best out of the Maldives as divers then resorts are not really the way to go. To see a variety of sites in and around the atolls and channels, a liveaboard is really the only answer.

So we don’t send you to resorts crammed full of doe-eyed honeymooners or rampaging kids. Instead we have hand-picked some of the most reliable liveaboards that cover the best diving in the country.

Isn’t it time you became a digit on the tourism board’s stats sheet?
