Raja Ampat’s Award-Winning Resort, Misool and Misool Foundation

Misool Marine Reserve ended 2017 on a justifiable high with being named as a Mission Blue Hope Spot! The co-founders of Misool and Misool Foundation, Marit and Andrew Miners, brought their passion for the ocean to bear and have shown how everyday people can affect real change.

At the beginning…

Misool lagoon, image courtesy of Shawn Heinrichs[/caption]Back in 2005, early in the Miners’ courtship, they spent their extended 3rd date diving Raja Ampat’s undiscovered reefs off the remote island Batbitim, Misool. During a surface interval, they inadvertently discovered a recently abandoned shark finning camp. Itinerant camps such as these contribute to the decimation of shark populations (approximately 100 million sharks are slaughtered each year for their fins).

During this time, Raja Ampat was yet to be ‘discovered’ and it was certainly an off the beaten track destination only visited by a handful of adventurous divers. Horrified by their discovery, Andrew sought permission from the local clans to build a conservation centre on Batbitim Island. With the elders’ blessing, Andrew and Marit began the daunting task of protecting the marine environment in this remote location. Only armed with their determination to effect change, they poured all their energy and enthusiasm into their passion project. The Miners’ have shown that despite not having a background in education conservation, architecture, construction or small island politics and little capital great things can be accomplished.

To fund their conservation projects, Misool was developed in 2008 and within 10 years the resort has been recognised by the travel industry. In 2017 Misool was awarded the World Travel & Tourist Council’s most prestigious prize, the Tourism for Tomorrow Award. Their strategy of marrying a for-profit organisation, Misool, and the non-profit Misool Foundation is working. The reserve now covers 300,000 acres and is patrolled by 15 local rangers using a 5-boat fleet kitted with radar surveillance to assist in preventing illegal fishing. 13 years since Marit and Andrew first committed to protecting Batbitim, they continue to successfully contribute to the environment, local communities and Indonesian tourism.

If resort diving in the heart of the Coral Triangle, an area considered to have the highest concentration of marine biodiversity on earth, is appealing then look no further than Misool. Contact us today and book your next diving holiday at an award-winning resort with a conscience now!

If you are interested in diving with Misool let us know and we will make it happen! send us an email.

You Can Contribute To Red Sea Turtle Conservation Research In 2018

Have you booked your 2018 Red Sea liveaboard cruise? Then you can assist TurtleWatch Egypt with their conservation research.

Red Sea turtle dives, image courtesy of Andromeda

Red Sea turtle dives, image courtesy of Andromeda

TurtleWatch Egypt is a citizen science program that works with local NGO’s and dive-centres to catalogue green and hawksbill turtles in Egypt and the Red Sea. The project began in 2011 in collaboration with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) and is focused on estimating the turtle demographics in the area (numbers and distribution). These findings will be used to pinpoint areas which require improved turtle protection throughout the Red Sea.

How can you contribute research data?
The TurtleWatch package can be downloaded from: http://www.boomerang4conservation.org/index.php/conservation-efforts/turtlewatch-egypt/turtlewatch-package, your package will include:

  • the TurtleWatch Manual (in .pdf);
  • the TurtleWatch survey form (in .pdf);
  • the TurtleWatch logo/ban that you can add to your website;
  • a set of Red Sea turtle identification sheets (in .pdf) and
  • a database where to report your sightings (in .xls).

In addition to the package, divers will need an underwater camera, a marker stick or tape measure to estimate the turtle straight carapace length (details are included in the manual) and a device with an internet connection to email the data.

Divers are asked to photograph both sides of the turtle’s face, although this is sometimes not so easy… Images, together with the dive site name, liveaboard/dive centre name, dive-guide, the date and your name must be sent to Boomerang For Earth Conservation. By comparing the scale patterns from both sides of the head, individuals can be recognised by these unique markings and their locations recorded by the TurtleWatch team. As a contributor, you will receive regular updates on the project.

If you’re passionate about conserving our marine ninjas for future generations, then book your Red Sea liveaboard cruise now and download your TurtleWatch package!

If you are interested in a Red Sea diving holiday let us know and we will make it happen! send us an email.

250% Increase For Sipadan Permit!

The small oceanic island, Sipadan, is considered a titan amongst many in the diving world. Rising 600m from the Celebes seafloor, the island itself is a mere 0.5km long and 200m wide yet offers divers a smorgasbord of marine life below the waves.

This iconic Malaysian diving destination has received rave reviews from the who’s who of internationally recognised divers. Recently it made the cut and several scenes were included in the phenomenal BBC series, Blue Planet II. Sipadan’s inclusion in the series came as no surprise to divers who have been fortunate to personally witness the variety and abundance of marine life which calls Sipadan home.

Over the years various steps have been taken to protect the island:

  • In 2004 all on-site dive and resort operators were instructed to remove structures from the island
  • The following year permits were restricted to 120 per day
  • Sipadan Island was gazetted a Marine Protected Area in October 2009, unfortunately, the protection only extended to the 13.5 hectares of land
  • 2016, 4 dive marshals were tasked to ensure that divers do not damage the rich coral at the 12 sites surrounding the island. This was the first step toward gazetting the park as an officially protected marine park which came into effect in March 2016
  • 6,846 hectares surrounding Pulau Sipadan are now protected

Revenue which is derived from diving the waters surrounding the island is collected by Sabah Parks, and the permit conservations fee is currently MYR 42.40 per day (approx USD 10). From the 14 August 2018, the cost per permit will increase to MYR 148.40 (approx USD 35) in accordance with the announcement made by Sabah Parks, the collecting agent for Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN).

Hawaii passes bill to ban over 3,500 sunscreen products to protect coral reefs

Sunscreen Toxicity Ratings
(image courtesy of EWG Skin Deep)

Millions of tourists flock to beautiful Hawaii every year to enjoy the natural beauty of the islands. Many are drawn to the stunning beaches and the superb diving on offer in the North Pacific Ocean. Unbeknown to many, some varieties of sunscreen have been damaging the very life that attracted visitors in the first place.

Recently Sen. Mike Gabbard introduced the bill that would prohibit the sale of over the counter sunscreens containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate.

“Hawaii is the first state in the nation to pass a measure of this magnitude. The world was watching. We delivered. Preserve and protect our ocean environment!” said state Sen. Will Espero on Twitter after the SB2571 bill passed in his chamber. If the bill is signed by Hawaii Governor, David Ige, it will go into effect 1 January 2021.

A 2015 study that was published in the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology found that these chemicals affect corals and fish in a variety of ways. An estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen lands in the oceans each year causing untold damage. The bill is not banning all sunscreens, there are environmentally friendly suncream options available for swimmers and divers.

The next time you enter our precious ocean, whether in Hawaii or another diving destination, make sure that you make a responsible choice when selecting your sun protection cream.

If you choose Hawaii as your next diving holiday, act now and you could get up to 28% discount on selected departure dates with the Kona Aggressor II.

Liveaboard Diving In Raja Ampat with Calico Jack

Guest post written by Calico Jack Charters

Located deep in the heart of the coral triangle, the area of Raja Ampat nestles over 1,400 species of fish and over 600 coral kinds giving it the impressive title as the most marine bio-diverse place on earth.  Indeed 75% of all known coral species inhabit these waters!

Calico Jack is a mighty and proud vessel that offers an unrivaled luxury liveaboard diving experience that more than compliments the epic voyage through the lands of “The Four Kings”. Boarding the ship after a swift and attentive transfer from mainland Sorong, guests are welcomed by the smell of tropical forest hardwoods and beaming smiles. There is something about Indonesian hospitality that is unmatched and the crew has it in bundles throughout the duration of the expedition, from the boat boys to the knowledgeable dive guides. After settling in with a fresh coconut in hand you will be lead to your cozy boutique cabin (one of five on board), which will be your home for the next 11 nights.

Calico Jack aspires to offer three dives a day with night dives on alternate days. In total, you could rack up over 34 dives over 11 days. The Calico Jack crew work like clockwork to ensure the efficient turnaround between dives with safety and attentiveness at the core.

Here are some of the areas that are covered during an 11 night cruise:
Misool is located in south Raja Ampat and is famous for its steep rocks with vertical walls, a profusion of soft colourful corals, sea fans draped brilliantly over the reefs and plenty of fish.

Penemu includes two of the most famous Raja Ampat dive sites, My Reef and Melissa’s Garden. Here you can enjoy some of the largest populations of fish in the area.  In the afternoon, after the third dive, you can take a short boat tour to Penemu and walk up to the famous viewpoint above Penemu’s star-shaped lagoons. Here, you will have time to kayak and paddle board amongst the incredible karst limestone landscape before sunset and dinner onboard.

Wofo is the most northern point of the cruise with a stunning dive traversing the deep black fan landscape rising to a beautiful and pristine shallow reef. The evening will be passed on the beach experiencing one of Calico Jack’s famous beach BBQ parties. The crew will entertain and socialise with the guests as you relax on our giant bean bags under a pagoda, explore the beach and meet the local hermit crabs.

Gam is the location, where under the right conditions, you can expect some of the highest voltage diving in Raja Ampat. Currents bring in massive schools of barracudas, three species of fusiliers, trevallies, batfish, bumphead parrotfish, wobbegong sharks, as well as black and white tip reef sharks.

Arborek area, is where you can dive at one of the most reliable manta ray congregation spots in all of Raja Ampat, the famous cleaning station, Manta Sandy. In the afternoon Calico Jack makes it’s way to Arborek in Dampier Strait, where you will visit the local village and see the traditional way of life for these island people, before enjoying a night dive at the Arborek Pier.

Dampier Strait: The final dive will be in the morning at Cape Kri where you will discover some of the largest concentrations of big fish in Raja Ampat. In the afternoon, we have time to relax on one of Kri’s stunning secluded beaches before sailing back to Sorong where you will arrive later in the evening.

Raja Ampat is truly spectacular, breathtaking and unforgettable. Calico Jack Charters is the perfect compliment to such a unique diving experience with a level of service that thrives on the very best hospitality to ensure that your voyage through the dragon-sequel landscape is truly treasured.

Planing a Palau Diving Holiday? Learn About the Mandatory ‘Palau Eco Pledge’

Is Palau on your radar as your next liveaboard diving holiday destination? Then be prepared to sign their Eco Pledge at immigration in order to obtain entry.

Palau, for your liveaboard diving vacation

Palau, for your liveaboard diving vacation

This small island nation has a history of being serious about protecting their natural resources.

  • 2009 the world’s first shark sanctuary was created in the archipelago
  • 2015 the nation moved towards protecting 80% of its maritime territory as a fully protected marine reserve and created the Palau National Marine Sanctuary. The sanctuary protects marine life in a vast area of almost 500,000 square kilometres.
  • 2017, Palau President, Tommy Remengesau, appealed to the attendees at the United Nations Oceans’ Conference. He proposed that they should commit to protecting 30% of the world’s oceans under a Global Marine Sanctuary Network by 2030.

President Remengesau has once again turned his attention on how best to preserve his beautiful homeland. The tiny Pacific nation boasts crystal clear waters, pristine coral reefs teeming with fish life and is considered to be one of the world’s best diving spots.

Once a niche tourist destination, the archipelago has seen a huge increase in tourism, a staggering 70% on 2010 figures. The 150,000 tourists in 2016 far outnumbered the islands’ 20,000 population, who are struggling to ensure that future generations will inherit a pristine environment. Unfortunately, some visitors have shown disregard and disrespect by capturing turtles and taking selfies with them, walking on fragile coral and leaving trash on the beaches.

Visitors to Palau have to show intent to respect the environment in order to gain entry into the country. Upon arriving in Palau, you will have to sign the “Palau Pledge”. Said to be a world first, the symbolic pledge was written with the help of Palau’s children. “I take this pledge as your guest, to protect and preserve your beautiful island home,” it reads in part. “I vow to tread lightly, act kindly and explore mindfully.” President Tommy Remengesau said “Conservation is at the heart of our culture,” “We rely on our environment to survive and if our beautiful country is lost to environmental degradation, we will be the last generation to enjoy both its beauty and life-sustaining biodiversity.”

The strides Palau has made to protect its environment not only benefits their people, it has created the perfect liveaboard diving vacation destination. Our liveaboard itineraries take you far from the maddening crowds where you can enjoy the stunning islands and magnificent marine life. Virtual Wreck Diving – SS Thistlegorm

Divers and non-divers alike across the globe can now ‘dive’ the iconic SS Thistlegorm shipwreck remotely! A new 3D website has been launched that allows you to take a virtual tour of one of the world’s most popular wrecks.

The project is the first to use 360 video and is part of the Nottingham University’s Presence in the Past maritime archaeology study in partnership with Al Shams (Cairo) and Alexandria Universities in Egypt. Dr. Jon Henderson of the University of Nottingham’s School of Archaeology was the project director. “This was one of the most exciting things, because with 360-degree video we can now do guided tours around the wreck, so you can actually experience what it’s like to dive it.” said Dr. J. Henderson.

“This is an important part of Britain’s and Egypt’s shared heritage and a monument to the herculean efforts of the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Nine men died on the SS Thistlegorm, five Royal Navy gunners and four merchant sailors, just a small part of the 35,000 out of 135,000 Merchant Navy sailors that gave their lives during the war.” “In the Merchant Navy one in four men did not come back – that’s the highest proportion of all the fighting forces. We owe to the memory of these brave men to record and preserve their legacy.”

24,307 high resolution photos were taken across an area of approximately 3 hectares. Amazingly this only took 14 hours during 12 dives! The wreck has been reconstructed in photo-realistic detail and 3D models have been created. Visitors to The Thistlegorm Project website can learn more about photogrammetry that was used to create the the 3D imagery as and explore the ships’ outer shell, internal decks, cabins and cargo.

Belize Prioritises Its Environment And Bans Oil Exploration

Some big, powerful western countries could learn a thing or 2 from Belize. This developing nation is leading the way by placing its environment front and center and has announced bold legislation to stop oil exploration in all of its waters.

The small nation is choosing its reefs over oil. 10% of its gross domestic product (US$ 200 million) comes from its tourism industry. The reef is the country’s biggest tourist attraction and provides invaluable employment. More than half of the country’s livelihoods are supported by industry relating to the reef.

“Belize is a small country making a mighty commitment to putting the environment first,” says Nadia Book, a reef scientist with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an organisation that campaigned for the protection of the reefs. This spectacular natural resource is a 300 km long stretch of coral that forms part of the 900 km Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system. The Belize Reef was recognised by Unesco in 1996 when it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site. Belize not only offers divers the Belize Reef, the country can also claim 3 out of the 4 atolls in the Caribbean. The atolls include Lighthouse Reef, Glovers Reef (also a World Heritage site) and Turneffe Reef.

With such forward-thinking and commitment to conservation and a variety of diving destinations, Belize is sure to deliver. Whether you are interested in diving a natural wonder that can be seen with the naked eye from space, having encounters with dolphins, manatees or sharks, or witnessing migrating pilot or killer whales, Belize is the vacation destination for you.
