Fiji Shark Diving up for BBC Environmental Award
Sharks - is there a diver out there who doesn't want to see them? Can any diver honestly say that sharks are boring? Hell, no. We all want to see sharks, but the sad fact is that in many parts of the world, sharks are hunted down and killed. And often it's not for the meat, just for the fins. Shark finning has reduced shark populations all over the world, and the money that can be made by local fishermen makes it hard to stop unless there's an alternative. In Fiji, the team at Beqa Adventure Divers who run shark dives at Lagoon Resort have teamed up with local fishermen, and have created a marine reserve where shark fishing is not allowed. Over the last few years the sharks have started to return in greater numbers, which means great shark dives! Part of the money paid by customers on shark dive trips goes direct to local fishermen, meaning they can profit from protecting the sharks rather than killing them. This hard work has been recognised by the BBC's World Challenge, and the "Shark Park" is one of the 12 finalists in the 2006 competition. The winner is due to be announced in December. Mooring Buoy Project in Komodo
The Komodo National Park Conservation Fund managed by PT Putra Naga Komodo and marine biologist Helen Newman have teamed up to undertake an ambitious mooring buoy project to install permanent moorings around this world renown National Park. Aimed at protecting coral reefs from anchor damage by big liveaboard dive boats and visiting yachts, the scheme involves installing environmentally friendly Manta Ray moorings. These moorings are drilled into sand patches or rubble areas and cause minimal damage to the environment, providing a secure anchorage for many years. Qualified divers are needed to assist with the installation in what will be an educational and rewarding trip, along with some interesting work. Divers should be experienced and capable of working at 30m and have a nitrox qualification. There will be time for the occasional leisure dive and experienced divers will be on board to assist. Participants will learn multiple skills from rope splicing to operating an underwater jack hammer. Only 5 spaces are available on each trip. Trip Details; 10th – 18th February 2007 9 days/8 nights 18th – 26th February 2007 9 days/8 nights Cost US$ 800 per person per trip Price includes all meals, soft drinks, diving, tanks, weights and presentations. New Reef found in Thailand
The discovery of a new reef off the coast of Had Thai Muang, North of Phuket was reported by the World Wildlife Foundation in February this year. Initial surveys identified over 270 hectares (1 hectare = 10,000 square metres) of previously unknown, relatively healthy reefs with over 30 genera of hard corals, and at least 112 species of fish from 56 families, including a new record – the parrot fish Chlorurus Rakaura first discovered in Sri Lanka and never seen in Thailand until now, as well as a rare species of sweetlips Plectorhincus Macrospilus previously only known from the Similan Islands. There may still be more surprises to come... The reef is not open to dive trips (yet), but we have spoken to a diver working for the Had Thai Muang National Park who says the reef is in excellent condition. Humpbacks in Fiji
Over the last few months, guests on the Tui Tai Adventure Cruises have been treated on several occasions to the sight of humpback whales around the boat. They have even been able to dive in and swim with the whales! In 2003, the government of Fiji declared a 360km "exclusive economic zone" around the Koro Sea a whale sanctuary ensuring free passage for whales through Fiji's waters. Humpbacks migrate every winter from Antarctica to the South Pacific to mate and give birth. Back in the 19th century, thousands of whales were killed around Fiji, and indeed the town of Levuka was founded as a whaling station. It seems that thanks to whaling regulations and now the declaration of this special zone, visitors to Fiji have the chance to see whales again.
