Galapagos Islands Now On Google Street View!

A trip to the Galapagos Islands may only be dream for many of us but it’s still possible to retrace Charles Darwin’s step with the aid of Google Street View. Rather than pedestrians with blurred faces, you come across giant tortoises, blue footed boobies and marine iguanas and with the help of Seaview Survey you can even ‘walk’ underwater and have a look around the reefs accompanied by it’s playful sea lions!

As well as giving the ‘armchair adventurers’ a wonderful insight into these unique and diverse islands, there is also a scientific value to this project, it’s 178 years since Darwin’s historic journey and the the islands have been studied for generations but have never been well mapped says Sven Lorenz of the Darwin FoundationOpens in a new window:

“There has always been satellite imagery, of course, but to now take that next step and work with Google to provide better mapping for Galapagos is something that is very important for our work, and much appreciated.”

Have a look behind the scenes with the Google Street View team:

So if this has got you dreaming about a trip to these magical islands on either a dedicated nature tour or a Galapagos diving Liveaboard then Contact Dive The World on +66 (0)83 505 7794 or send us an email.

Egypt Update: Charter Flights to South Sinai To Resume?

Last updated: 29 August 2013

Read more about diving in the Red SeaWe know what a popular destination Egypt is for diving, so we are trying to give you every bit of news we receive. Although nothing official has been announced yet, there does seem to be the possibility of European charter flights resuming service towards the end of September. There is a certain amount of frustration among the operators which seems to service a little in the below statement.

The managing director of MS Royal Evolution has released the following statement:

Dear Partners and Colleagues,

Many of you have been in contact with us over the last few days, expressing concerns about the “situation” in Egypt after the interim government’s crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood minority protest camps in Cairo and Alexandria.

Some of you have referred to the cancelled charter flights to Egypt for the next two weeks. Please understand that we can do nothing about the “over-exaggeration” and super zealous insurance companies who refuse to allow the flights to operate. The demand is there for people wishing to come.

However, there is an even bigger western agenda to support the minority militants, for some reason best known to themselves, to put pressure on the huge majority of non-militant Egyptian people to rethink their position. Hence, the dictates to upgrade the travel warnings and make it impossible for some operators to get insurance.

The fact is that you are still far safer here in the Red Sea than you would be in any major capital city in Europe. We confirm that the Red Sea remain safe despite all the rumors around.

We do understand your and your clients concerns for traveling to Egypt this days after the negative media coverage by the western. Therefore, we’ll continue honoring our commitments as usual and offer to cancel the confirmed bookings till the end of September 2013 without any fees.

However, we would like to inform you that we have received several confirmations from big Tour Operators in Europe that the charter flights will resume their flight schedule to the Red Sea and South Sinai starting from the 19th September 2013.

We would like to thank you for all your support during the last years, as we promise you that we’ll continue stressing on safety, training & high quality services we’ve become known for the
satisfaction of our valuable guests.

Many thanks wishing you all a successful season.

Kind Regards,
Yasser El Moafi
Chairman & Managing Director
Red Sea Paradise for Cruises S.A.E owner & operator of M/S Royal Evolution
Hurghada, 27th August 2013

Please note that the political views expressed in this statement are not necessarily the opinions held by Dive The World.

Important Egypt Update

With many countries now issuing a general travel warning for Egypt, some charter airlines have put a hold on services until 15 September. We strongly urge any divers who are traveling between now and those dates to re-check their flight situation. We have already tried contacting all of our customers traveling to Egypt in this period but in the unlikely event you haven’t received an email; please contact us as soon as possible on +66(0)835057794 or send us an email..

If your flight is still departing or you’re already traveling we have been assured from our colleagues in Sharm El Sheikh that it’s very much business as usual, boats are still running and there is still no effect from the political turmoil.

“For information: The situation in Sharm is as always, curfew is not in place and boats are going out, we can understand that many guest are worried but we assure that we will inform you if situation in Sharm is changing” said Petra Masztalerz from King Snefro Fleet.

And from Hurghada:
“In short, everything is going on as usual here. Dive boats and snorkel boats are out every day, bars and restaurants are open as usual and tourists are having a good holiday.
Other than on 14th August when it was advised that guests stay in their hotels (some did and many didn’t), it’s now business as usual as this was then lifted the following day. Daily diving has continued as planned, as have our snorkeling excursions.
There was a protest march through Hurghada after Friday prayers which I believe was peaceful with quite a lot of chanting and waving and all was quiet again by early evening.
The nightlife has continued as normal, if a little quieter. Tourists are walking around the main shopping/bar areas and enjoying their holidays.
Several countries, as you are aware, have suspended flights to Hurghada for varying periods of time. British guests continue to arrive and information coming back from guests already in resort is very positive
As stated above, the diving, the boats, the courses and the holiday atmosphere is as it was. The Red Sea resorts need people to continue to holiday and dive here – do come and visit”
said Tiarnagh Costello from Emperor divers.

So in short if your flight is still going it looks like you’re still in for a great holiday, just with fewer people around. We understand that you may have reservations about traveling to Egypt but please continue with your plans if possible and give some much needed support to our Red Sea Colleagues.

Temporary Closures At Bali Airport

If you’ve booked or thinking of going to Bali on the 05/06 or 08/09 October 2013 then please be aware that Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali will be closed to commercial flights from 1000hrs to 1600hrs on the above dates when the island hosts the APEC summit.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang S. Ervan said:

Whenever we host large conferences or meetings, we need to adjust the air slots because important people are going to attend and they need clearance, one hour before and after [their flights]. We have communicated this issue with every airline operating in the country so that they can make new arrangements for their flights,” Bambang told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

If you have already booked a flight you should expect notice from the airline. If not then we would suggest choosing different dates. We have checked our customer bookings and we don’t believe we have any divers whose holiday will be affected. If you are unsure the please contact our sales team on +66 (0)83 505 7794 or send us an email.
