Ecological Disaster Averted In The Red Sea

17th June 2011

Early in May the governor of South Sinai in the Red Sea issued a decree that allowed fishing in the formerly protected Ras Mohammed National Park.

This decree was not only illegal it also violated the sanctity of environmental regulations. The decision spelled potential disaster for the park both ecologically and economically and sparked a huge outcry not only among the Red Sea community but worldwide.

Ras Mohammed is known for its rich and abundant marine life. It boasts masses of reef fish, colourful and diverse corals, spectacular sea walls and a vast array of pelagic fish all of which provide excellent Red Sea scuba diving opportunities on the Sinai Peninsula. Divers can expect encounters with schools of hammerhead sharks, barracuda, giant tuna, snappers and batfish, as well as sting rays, scorpionfish and moray eels.

So it is not difficult to understand that allowing unregulated fishing activities in the park would have a strong negative impact on the senstive ecosystem and adversely affect the local economy.

HEPCA along with other members of the Red Sea community united together and leapt into action to lobby against the governor’s decree. They placed a tremendous amount of pressure on the local and national government and mobilised thousands of campaigners through various media outlets. This culminated in a direct confrontation between HEPCA’s managing director Amr Ali and the governor of South Sinai General Shosha on the 18th of May, on the famous ‘On TV’ talk show ‘Baladna Bel Masry’.

It was relief all round the following morning of the 19th of May, when the governor revoked his decree and Ras Mohammed became a de facto no-take zone once again.

Ras Mohammed National park was born in 1983 when the Egyptian government declared 97 km² a protected area. The park has since grown to 480 km² and is protected by rangers who patrol the grounds and surrounding seas. Diving is popular here but regulated and only allowed in designated areas during the day time.

We are grateful to HEPCA and everyone who was involved in or supported the campaign to restore the National Park of Ras Mohammed to its rightful status as a marine protected area.

Would you like to experience Ras Mohammed diving and discover its underwater delights? Contact Dive The World to find out more about our Sinai liveaboards. You can send us an email or call us on +66 (0)83 505 7794.

Red Sea Diving World Record Attempt

23rd May 2011

This summer, on the 26th of July 2011, divers from all over the world will attempt to break the world record in carrying out the largest collective dive ever! This will take place, in Hurghada, in the Red Sea, Egypt.

The “Egypt Scuba Challenge” wants to break the current record of 2486 divers and is aiming for 3000 divers.
The current world record was made on the 17th of August 2009 in Manado, Indonesia. With the help of the navy, 2486 people managed to dive in Indonesia at the same time at the same location.

The Egyptian Divers Syndicate came up with the idea and have been working on the organisation of the event in cooperation with HEPCA.

They searched for the right spot that is suitable to hold such a huge amount of divers without any detrimental effect on the environment and have agreed upon the outside area of the New Marina in Hurghada.

This location has a large sandy plateau at around 13m deep, which is capable of holding 3000 divers. There is hardly any marine life there, but plenty of rubbish. For this reason the event organisers hope not only to break the world record for the largest collective dive, but also the world record for the largest underwater cleanup!

Both records have already been applied for and were accepted by Guinness World Records. The world record attempt will not only help promote tourism and diving in the Red Sea but, at the same time, raise environmental awareness.

Various media and TV channels have already announced their interest to cover the event and make it public on an international level.

So if you’d love to dive the Red Sea and be part of this world record attempt then contact Dive The World now and you could soon be a World Record holder! Send us an email or call us on +66 (0)83 505 7794.

Note:You need to be a qualified diver – minimum required level: open water diver to take part.

HEPCA’s Important Red Sea Mooring Work

21st April 2011

In their continued efforts for environmental conservation and protection, particularly of the Red Sea dive sites and reefs, Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) have been busy this month of April carrying out mooring maintenance.

As the Red Sea has grown in popularity as a diving destination, so has the number of private and commercial boats cruising the waters. Unfortunately physical damage caused by anchors is one of the biggest threats to the preservation of the coral reefs. Mooring buoy systems eliminate the need for anchoring and therefore help protect the reefs. HEPCA have been responsible for developing, installing and maintaining this system in the Red Sea.

Their mooring team performed maintenance and replacement work on 14 different moorings at 6 different reef locations. at Wadi El-Gemmal and Marsa Alam recently. They also carried out maintenance for 16 moorings and replaced 4 mooring lines of different types, at 9 locations in Al-Qusair.

HEPCA is an international NGO specialising in the field of marine conservation in the Red Sea as well as promoting sustainable tourism practices. Founded in 1992 by 12 divers the group has now grown into an international team of scientists and industry experts.

HEPCA urges all Red Sea visitors to report any missing or damaged moorings to them by sending an e-mail.

Are you planning to visit the Red Sea? Contact Dive The World to discuss arranging some Hurghada day trip diving or a liveaboard holiday on +66 (0)83 505 7794 or you can send us an email.

News from Hurghada, Egypt

21st February 2011

As everyone knows, Egypt has been going through a period of civil upheaval, a popular uprising. However it is always difficult to appreciate what facts are like on the ground. Modern news media often does little to reflect the actual experience and truth.

We thought we would share with you a few words from one of our operators in Hurghada:

Dear friends, guests, dive clubs and tour operators,

Now it is time again to inform you about the events here in Egypt. It is quiet. It’s too quiet, only a few tourists here are enjoying their holidays. Many hotels and shops are closed.

There are situations that drive tears of emotion in your eyes. Sorry, that you don’t receive some of these pictures, because for the TV channels they are not spectacular enough.

Diving Liveaboards aboard MY FeloAfter President Mubarak’s finally “understanding” and his resignation was announced, thousands came to Tahrir Square in Cairo the next morning , armed with brooms and sweeping devices. There was swept, scrubbed and polished until the place was clean. There were beautiful pictures – people were hugging each other – known or unknown!

….I could continue a long time now . To make it short, there is movement in the country, positive movement. Only you as our guests, is missing. We want to assure you again that you can come without worry to us, even if the Foreign Office still advises to come not to Egypt. Even the airlines are increasing the planes again.

The Egyptian people are sweet, friendly and patient people… Well done, we are proud of all the parties who have been there on the Tahrir Square for many days, and everywhere else endured, have cared for each other and looked after. A very, very bitter aftertaste are the 350 people who gave their lives in the fight against injustice and corruption. We would like to remember them.

If you wish to visit Egypt now, there are, as you can imagine, some very attractive discount deals available. See here for Red Sea Special Offers

HEPCA Campaigns to Free Dolphins in Egypt

12th October 2010

Have you ever dived with dolphins in the Red Sea? Can you even imagine them confined in a swimming pool smaller than 9m x 9m x 4m, with visibility less than 20cm! On 3 October 2010, Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) arranged a ‘Dolphin Awareness Day’ to help free 4 dolphins being kept in these horrendous conditions.

If you would prefer to see dolphins at pristine Red Sea dive sites, than in capitivity, then have a look at this HEPCA video detailing the plight of these dolphins:

4 dolphins from Japan were recently being kept in an inadequate enclosure while awaiting completion of a new dolphinarium. HEPCA and Ric O’Barry took steps to have the dolphins moved to the new partially completed dolphinarium.

HEPCA is vehemently against establishing the dolphinarium, stating there is no need to see dolphins in captivity when large pods of dolphins can routinely be seen swimming in the waters around Egypt.

They urge us not to support dolphin shows as this will result in more dolphins being caught and kept in captivity. If you agree with them please sign their petition:

Red Sea Emperor Fraser Sinks – Everyone Safe

19th December 2009

The MY Emperor Fraser has sunk at Dunraven near Sharm El Sheikh. The incident occurred during the second dive on the afternoon of 16 Dec 09. A change in wind direction caused the Red Sea liveaboard to break free of her mooring lines and head towards the reef. The Captain made the decision to safeguard the 11 divers still in the water by not starting the engines, rather choosing to sacrifice Emperor Fraser on the reef.

The hull was breached in the collision and when the crew were unable to plug the hole the Captain gave the order to abandon ship onto the Zodiacs. Everyone was rescued due to The Emperor Fleet headquarters’ prompt liaising with the Egyptian Navy and other dive boats in the area.  The guests were taken safely to the Hilton Dreams Hotel and given new, dry clothes.

Emperor Divers: “Express their thanks to the Egyptian navy and CDWS for their assistance. Emperor Divers is deeply regretful that this unfortunate incident has affected our guests’ holiday and is doing everything possible to provide them with diving in the Sharm and Hurghada areas before they fly home.”
